Understanding the Federal Elections – Week Four

Week Four – In the 2025 Election, Week Four was Debate Week – with the French Debate on Wednesday and the English Debate on Thursday.

Monday began with both the Liberal and Conservative Leaders in the Montreal area holding press conferences in the morning and then spending the rest of the day preparing for the Debates. Tuesday saw the Liberal, Conservative, NDP, Bloc and Green Party Leaders holding morning press conferences and then the rest of the day in debate prep.

On Wednesday morning the Debate Commission removed the Green Party Leader from both the Debates. It also announced that the French Debate would start 2 hours earlier than originally scheduled to accommodate the Montreal Canadiens vs Carolina Hurricanes hockey game.

Despite not being as fluent in French as the other Leaders, Poilievre; Sinch or Blanchet, Mark Carney appeared calm throughout the Debate even though he was the constant target of the other three Leaders. He seemed to hold his own and did not make any stumbles. After the Debate, commentators agreed that there was no “knockout punch” and that each Leader did what they had to do in order to hold onto their supporters. Commentators indicated that Poilievre did not make a positive case for being the Prime Minister as he was stiff; not warm and was “smirky” several occasions.

The Thursday English Debate saw the four Leaders – Carney, Poilievre; Sinch and Blanchet – repeat most of the performances of the French Debate. Again, there was no “knockout punch” and the Leaders did what they had to do to hold their supporters and urge the to get out to vote.

Friday saw each Leader back on the Campaign Trail – Making announcements and encouraging all voters to vote in the Advance Polls.
