14 Apr Understanding the Federal Elections – Week Three
Week Three – The third week of the campaign marked the half way point in the 2025 Election.
The half of the campaign centered around the Trump Tariffs and how those tariffs affected Canadians and Canadian businesses. Week Three was defined by the Trump Tariffs on the world economy; how the world reacted to them and how Donald Trump reacted to the sharp decline in the stock markets.
The polling numbers began to converge. By the end of the week, all the major pollsters were reporting virtually the same numbers nationally – Liberals-45%; Conservative-36%; NDP-8%; Bloc-5%; Green-3%; PPC-2% with undecided voters at 16%.
Both the Liberal and Conservative campaigns held rallies this week. While the Liberal rallies were well attended, the conservative rallies were attended by large crowds. The Conservative Edmonton rally on Tuesday evening was attended to 12,000 to 15000 people. The difference in the size of the crowds lead some to speculate that the polling numbers were inaccurate; while others speculated that rally attendees came from far and wide. There was also some speculation that many attendees were at the rally to see the spectacle and were not necessarily Conservative voters.
A number of journalists and commentators raised the issue that the closer Election Day get the more Pierre Poilievre is using the same verbal tactics as Donald Trump, such as giving opponents nick names, personal digs and attacking the character of his opponents.
Toward the end of the week, several commentators were suggesting that the Conservative campaign was in chaos and that the dramatic fall in the Conservative polling numbers from a 26% lead in January to trailing by 9% was due to “campaign malpractice”.
Next week will see the French Leaders’ Debate on Wednesday, April 16th and the English Debate on Thursday, April 17. There will also be a lull over the Easter weekend.
