03 Feb Potential Implications of US Tariffs
Advocating for Interprovincial Trade
Toronto – Dear Meat and Poultry processors.
GTA Strategies has been working with Meat and Poultry stakeholders and a number of your members for the past few years to ensure that Interprovincial trade becomes possible. We are also involved in the work being done between the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness- Ontario (OMAFRA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
In advance of potential US Tariffs on Canada, which the United States of America Government has indicated will be announced on February 1st, GTA Strategies has continued communicating with all stakeholders and advocating for the need to move immediately on implementing the Interprovincial Trade. Also, for funds (grants) to be provided by OMAFRA and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for your processing plant to help overcome these tariff difficulties.
GTA Strategies believes that, in the event of disruptive tariffs from the United States, Canada’s ability to feed itself, at least from a meat and poultry perspective, would help to derisk aspects of the economy and go a long way in providing some safety nets for Canadian businesses as well as helping to stabilize prices for consumers.
Food safety is paramount and, in this context, interprovincial trade managed properly, can fill in the gaps if meat and poultry export and import costs and volumes are significantly impacted.
The provincial and federal governments are reviewing contingency plans and interprovincial trade is a key element in a potential all-of-Canada response. Meat and Poultry stakeholders and GTA Strategies are strongly advocating for this and the need for funding to help upgrade, re-tool and expand internal and overseas markets to face the potential USA tariff difficulties.
