Prime Minister Carney announces a new gender-balanced cabinet

Toronto – Good afternoon, Prime Minister Carney announces a new gender-balanced cabinet to address economic challenges and U.S. tariff disputes. ​

Cabinet Composition
  • Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled a new cabinet at Rideau Hall. ​
  • The cabinet consists of 28 full members, equally divided between men and women. ​
  • There are 10 Secretaries of State, with 6 men and 4 women. ​
  • Over half of the cabinet members are new, signaling a desire for renewal. ​
Ministers and Portfolios ​
  • Several ministers retained their portfolios, including Francois-Philippe Champagne (Finance) and Chrystia Freeland (Transport). ​
  • New appointments include Anita Anand (Foreign Affairs) and Gary Anandasangaree (Public Safety).
  • Ministers are tasked with addressing key issues like crime, housing, and international trade.
  • Minister Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade will be responsible to remove barriers on Interprovincial Trade
Legislative Agenda
  • The government aims to remove interprovincial trade barriers and address the ongoing tariff dispute with the U.S. ​
  • A Budget for 2025 is expected to be introduced by July 1, including a middle-class tax cut and GST removal for first-time home purchases. ​
  • Parliament will reconvene the week of May 26, with a Speech from the Throne on May 27. ​
