New $228M Government Fund for Ontario Businesses \u2013 Are You Eligible?<\/b><\/h2>

Toronto, ON \u2013 Mar 10<\/strong>, 2026<\/strong><\/p>

The Governments of Canada and Ontario have jointly announced a significant new funding initiative designed to support businesses and workers impacted by tariffs and global market shifts.<\/p>

The Canada\u2013Ontario Workforce Tariff Response<\/b> will invest $228.8 million over the next three years<\/b> to help Ontario employers retrain, upskill, and retain workers whose jobs have been affected by trade disruptions, supply chain changes, or evolving industry demands.<\/p>

The program will support approximately 27,000 workers across Ontario<\/b> and will be delivered through existing workforce programs such as Skills Advance Ontario, Employment Ontario, and the Canada\u2013Ontario Labour Market Development Agreement (LMDA).<\/b><\/b><\/p>

This initiative is designed not only to support workers who have lost jobs due to tariffs, but also to help businesses prevent layoffs and transition their workforce into new opportunities.<\/b><\/b><\/p>

How the Fund Works<\/b><\/h2>

The program provides financial support for employer-led training initiatives and workforce transition programs. Funding may support:<\/p>

\u2022 Workforce upskilling and retraining
\u2022 Layoff prevention and employee retention programs
\u2022 Training during federal Work-Sharing agreements
\u2022 Transitioning workers into new roles or industries
\u2022 Sector-based training partnerships with colleges or training organizations<\/p>

Funding can cover training development, instructional costs, employee participation during training, and other workforce development expenses.<\/p>

Eligible Businesses and Sectors<\/b><\/h2>

The program prioritizes sectors directly or indirectly impacted by tariffs or supply chain disruptions, including:<\/p>

\u2022 Automotive and automotive supply chain companies
\u2022 Steel and metals manufacturing
\u2022 Forestry and softwood lumber industries
\u2022 Advanced manufacturing and industrial suppliers
\u2022 Industrial technology and equipment manufacturers<\/p>

Businesses operating within these sectors\u2014or companies whose supply chains depend on them\u2014may qualify for funding.<\/p>

Additionally, employers seeking to retrain workers for emerging sectors such as\u00a0skilled trades, clean energy, infrastructure, and health care support industries<\/b> may also be eligible.<\/p>

Application Process and Timeline<\/b><\/h2>

Applications are being accepted immediately through the Skills Advance Ontario program<\/b> and will be reviewed on a rolling basis<\/b>.<\/p>

Projects are typically submitted by:<\/p>

\u2022 Industry associations
\u2022 Workforce training organizations
\u2022 Colleges or training providers working in partnership with employers<\/p>
